Making the Present more Perfect

As I think about a time I made my present more perfect, my mind goes back to a perfected past experience, when I challenged myself by doing something that really scared me.

This past summer, I went to Hawaii for the first time.

I gave a presentation at a medical conference. That was fun and I was happy and proud of myself for doing that, but the experience that I will cherish even more was that of going surfing for the first time.

I have to admit I was really afraid to try it. I am no spring chicken and I have had two surgeries on my back. My biggest fears were drowning, possibly getting eaten by a shark, or injuring my back. You can imagine the jitters as I found myself lying face down on the board, swimming out into the open ocean. The instructor and two other students were far ahead as I struggling to catch up to them.

When I finally made my way to the point where the instructor would “launch” us, I told him that I was afraid.

“You don’t have to be afraid,” he said. “Look. I am standing up.”

Sure enough, although we were several hundred feet from the shore, he was standing up. There were rocks underneath us. So I at least got rid of the fear of drowning. Then, I got myself into position, and when the wave hit, the instructor hurled me forward. I was just able to stand on my feet for a few seconds before I capsized into the water.

Yet, when I emerged, all in one piece, my back still functioning, I was overwhelmed with a great feeling of awe and pride. I had done it. If only for two or three seconds, I stood up and balanced myself on the board. I had conquered my fears. I felt great. I wanted do it again.

I went through the process two more times and was never able to stand up as I had before. I tired very easily and was all too happy to finally turn in. But the feeling of conquering my fears and doing something that left me feeling so fantastic will stay will me forever.

So I pose this question to you: What is something that you can do today, maybe right at this moment, that would make your present more perfect than it already is?

What is something that makes your knees quake with fear, yet deep down, the thought of doing it excites you like nothing else?

I would love to hear about it! Leave a comment or contact me in private if you would like to share and find out just how sweet it is to work with a life coach who can help you conquer your fears so that you can finally start enjoying this fabulous life you worked so hard to create!
